Bigger purse for Pattaya tournament

The PTT Pattaya Open women's tennis tournament will be held at the Dusit Resort, Pattaya from February 7-15 next year, Pentangle Promotions announced yesterday. The upgraded event, which is part of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, is a combination of two existing tournaments, the PTT Bangkok Open and the Pattaya Women's Open.

Kanyapat beaten

Thailand's Kanyapat Narattana was knocked out of the US Open girls' singles on Wednesday when she was beaten in the second round 6-4, 6-4 by Belgium's Tamaryn Hendler. Compatriot Noppawan Lertcheewakarn has already advanced to the third round.

Chinese weightlifting coach Zhang Baoshun will not get a new contract because of his poor performance with the Thai team at the 2008 Olympic Games. Coach Zhang's contract ran out after the Beijing Games at which Thailand's weightlifting team won only one gold from Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon in the women's 53kg division.

Thai duo off to a steady start

Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee was one-under par after 13 holes in the opening round of the European Masters yesterday. Compatriot Chapchai Nirat was even-par after 14 holes.
